I’ve had some really great feedback to my post, I NEVER KNEW MEMORIZING SCRIPTURE COULD BE THIS EASY!
Today, several of us are embarking on a journey to memorize the word of God together. And I hope you’ll join us!
In this post, I want to offer a few Scriptures to motivate us as we take our first steps, as well offer a few tips on how to memorize the word of God. Feel free to comment and offer your own techniques.
Okay, here are the Scriptures:
It’s quite clear, not only are we encouraged to memorize the Scriptures, but we are commanded to again and again.
There is a wonderful kind of divine/human symmetry taking place when we can recite the Bible from memory. Honestly, it should amaze us that we have the ability to speak the very words of God, that we can think God’s thoughts after Him, that we can have in our own hearts and minds what was first in His, and that we can speak what God first spoke to us.
How pleased we are as parents when our own children are able to repeat, verbatim, the words and bits of wisdom we have tried to instill in them over the years:
“Yeah, I know, Dad ” —
- People are more important than things.
- Keep your word.
- Offer refreshments to your guests.
- Be yourself, not a clone.
- Life isn’t fair.
- Take responsibility for your actions.
- Always say: “Thank you” “Please” “I’m sorry” “I forgive you” etc.
And so must God be!
Not only do all of us have access to the eternal word of God, we also have the time and freedom to be able to commit it to memory. Incredible! Our very own copy of God’s inspired Word! A Word delivered to us through the bloodshed, suffering and courage of others. A Word that has power to save our souls and the souls of others. What an act of grace to be able to say, along with Christ Himself:
- It is written: “Man does not live on bread alone.”
- It is written: “Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.”
- It is written: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
Write. Repeat. Write. Visualise. Apply
If you’d like a few tips on how to memorize, this is what I do: I copy the Scripture verse out, glue it to a 3×5 card and repeat it over and over. It’s that simple!
Of course, I say each verse out loud. I also write them down, over and over. I try to visualise the words when reciting them. Basically, I use all my senses. And perhaps most important of all, I try to visualize a situation that would apply to the Scripture I am learning. For instance, “Rise in the presence of the aged.” I try to visualise that happening and when the situation arises, so do the words.
Next, I keep the cards with me, one verse per card, to repeat them whenever I have a few minutes. The more I retain a verse, the less time I will need to say it as time goes by. However, I find it important to repeat each Scripture at least once a day for 2-3 weeks.
Very important: The extra effort and energy it takes to memorize something word-perfect is what really drills it into our dendrites.
By the way, I will write down the book and chapter, but not focus on that very much. As I see this info, I kind of just subconsciously absorb it. Getting the actual words of God inside of me is what is most important.
